“AHHH!!!” yelped Alix. “Get it away!”
“What?” said Reyna groggily. “Alix, I said ‘What?’.”
“Erm, I don’t mean to alarm you, but there may or may not be some werewolves outside of our camp.”
“WHAT?!” screamed the now awakened Jace. She scrambled to the entrance of their camp, where the other girls were standing mesmerized in horror.
Reyna turned towards Jace, her face ashen. “Werewolves.” She raised her arm pointing to faint gray dots coming towards their camp.
“Ughhhh” moaned Alix.
“This is bad. Bad. BAD!” hyperventilated Reyna.
“Could we please try not to freak out? And also, we still have all our stuff packed from last night, and I just rolled up our sleeping bags.” said Jace.
“Good. Let’s go. Like,now”
The trio left their campsite untouched, except for extinguishing their small fire. Reyna, a Roman (not to be confused with Praetor Reyna) was actually a child of Nemesis. She could feel that since her mother had been granting them bad luck (getting chased by werewolves, almost getting run over by a random guy behind a van, not finding any reasonably clean water, and also allowing them to lose nearly all of their possessions, save their very well-used sleeping bags and their weapons, she could guess that Fortuna, or should she say Tyche, and Alix’s mother, was at work. Lycaon’s pack wasn’t advancing on them anymore and they were actually gaining ground.
“Phew” gasped Reyna.
“Di immortales! That was so freakin’ TIRING” panted Alix.
Jace hissed in fury. “It ain't over yet. Oh no, it ain’t” she growled scowling at the werewolves approaching. The daughter of Nike sneered at the oncoming werewolves, and with only a silver dagger in her hand, she charged. The other girls ran after her until a silver knife sailed over Jace’s head. She screeched to a halt just before she crashed into someone that the demigods recognized at once to be Artemis.
“My Lady,” said the trio as they bowed.
“Girls, I’ve noticed that you seem to have been running away from something.” said Artemis.
Jace blushed, “Er, yeah. Lycaon and his stupid wolves have been chasing us since last week when we went back to school. Even though we could go back to CJ, we kinda peeved off almost the entire First and Second Cohorts male population. Thank goodness we didn’t upset Praetor Frank or any of the rest of the Seven or any more super-important people. That however does not mean influential people. We did annoy the most influential but I’m thankful that we didn't annoy the most IMPORTANT or powerful ones.”
“Hmm...THALIA!” shouted Artemis. Thalia Grace ran up to Artemis.
“Yes, My Lady?” she inquired.
“Girls, would you like to join the Hunt?”
“Yes!” said Jace, with not an ounce of hesitation.
“With pleasure.” added Reyna.
“Of course!” said Alix. “anything to have a good reason to never have to be involved with boys again.”
Artemis smiled. “That's what I like to hear,”
“Thank you, Lady Artemis”
“Now how old are you?” asked Artemis.
“14” answered Alix
“13” said Reyna
“Right between ‘em.” said Jace. “Thirteen-and-eight-months old”
A grin broke out on Artemis’ face. “You're perfect to join the Hunt! Now repeat after me…”
Almost sixty years later the three girls ran along with the other Hunters still looking as they did all those years before. However, because of Artemis’ interference with Lycaon’s prey, the girls, Lycaon and his pack would hunt Artemis and the Hunters of Artemis to extinction. This was a vow that every wolf swore, on the River Styx, to complete at any possible chance. The Hunt would have to be even more careful unless they wanted to face death.
